Syllabus

Our 200-hour curriculum is structured into six core modules, blending traditional yogic practices with modern teaching methodology. Below is an overview of what you will study during your 21-day intensive at The Sun YTTC Bali.

1. Shatkarma – Cleansing Process

Classical cleansing techniques to purify the body, build strength, and support overall health. You will learn and practice:

  • Jal Neti – Water nasal cleansing (weekdays, first week)
  • Shankha Prakashalana – Intestinal cleansing (first Saturday)
  • Sutra Neti – Rubber catheter nasal cleansing (weekdays, second week)
  • Kunjal – Throat and mucus cleansing (second Saturday)
  • Kapalbhati – Breathing technique for purifying the frontal brain region (daily practice)
  • Mantra Chanting – Introduction to five foundational mantras

2. Yoga Philosophy

Introduction to the origins of yoga – the roots of yoga, its core principles, and how the tradition has evolved over thousands of years.

The four Vedas – Rig Veda, Yajur Veda, Sama Veda, and Atharva Veda, and their place in yogic wisdom.

Classical schools of Indian philosophy (Six Darshanas) – Poorv Mimansa (Jaimini), Nyaya (Gautama), Vaisheshika (Kanada), Sankhya (Kapila), Yoga (Patanjali), and Uttar Mimansa / Brahma Sutra (Ved Vyasa).

Core yogic texts and practices – Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra and the eight limbs of Ashtanga Yoga; the Bhagavad Gita (Jnana, Bhakti, and Karma Yoga); and Hatha/Vinyasa foundations: asana, pranayama, nadis, bandhas, mudras, and chakras.

3. Yoga Anatomy & Physiology

A clear understanding of anatomy supports safe practice, better alignment, and deeper postures. Topics include:

  • Respiratory system and the breath–pranayama connection
  • Skeletal system and movement
  • Muscular system: physiology and key actions (pelvic girdle and thigh, trunk, shoulder girdle and upper arms)
  • Digestive system and basic Ayurvedic perspective
  • Cardiovascular system
  • Anatomy and physiology of inversions
  • Endocrine and nervous systems
  • Bandhas and chakras from an anatomical and energetic perspective

4. Meditation and Mantra Chanting

The 200-hour programme at The Sun YTTC Bali includes daily Ashtanga and Vinyasa practice alongside meditation and mantra. Over the 21-day intensive you will learn several meditation techniques and how to integrate them into your practice and teaching. You will also explore the ancient practice of Vedic mantra chanting – its purpose, correct pronunciation, and how to use it for personal practice and in class.

5. Pranayama

You will study the theory and practice of key pranayama techniques: how breath affects the nervous system, energy channels (nadis), and the mind. Topics include foundational techniques such as diaphragmatic breathing, Ujjayi, Nadi Shodhana, and Kapalbhati, along with safety guidelines, contraindications, and how to introduce pranayama safely in a class setting. Daily practice is woven into the schedule so you experience the effects of the breath and learn to teach from your own practice.

6. Ashtanga Yoga and Vinyasa Flow

Ashtanga Yoga – Ashtanga is a style of yoga where you follow the same set sequence of postures every time. Think of it as a fixed “recipe”: the order of poses does not change, so your body and mind learn the flow deeply. Each movement is tied to the breath (one breath per movement), which builds heat, strength, and focus. You will learn the Primary Series: sun salutations A and B, standing poses, seated poses, backbends, and closing postures. We focus on three pillars: breath (ujjayi), posture (asana), and gaze (drishti). You will learn safe progression, modifications for different bodies, and how to practice and teach the series with clarity. Regular Ashtanga practice builds discipline, strength, flexibility, and inner focus.

Vinyasa Flow – Vinyasa is often called “flow yoga”: instead of a fixed sequence, you move from one pose to the next in a way that you (or the teacher) design, with each movement linked to the breath. So while Ashtanga is the same every day, Vinyasa can change – different themes, pace, or peak poses. You will learn how to create and lead these flows: how to sequence a class (e.g. warming up, building to a peak, cooling down), how to use themes (e.g. heart-opening, hip release, balance), and how to adapt for different levels. You will practice teaching short flows and full classes with clear cues and safe alignment, so you can lead dynamic, accessible Vinyasa classes in studios and retreats.

7. Teaching Methodology

Participants will learn the art of teaching and how to effectively lead yoga classes. This includes creating clear class plans, using language that is inclusive and easy to follow, and how to adjust and assist students safely. You will develop the skills to hold space, give verbal and hands-on cues, and adapt your teaching for different levels and needs.
